Abnormalities of Fetal Growth

Introduction

The size of the baby is to a certain degree, an inborn characteristic. But to perhaps a greater extent, it has to do with the nutrition he or she gets from the mother through the placenta. The placenta provides blood flow, and that means everything from hydration, to nutrition and oxygen. Maternal habits or diseases that affect the placenta or what it delivers to the baby affect fetal growth. Extreme deviations in fetal growth, either large or small are causes for concern.
