Gina S. Nelson MD

Dr. Nelson has a long and unusual signature line in her personal email. It goes like this :

" Mother, wife, Obstetrician Gynecologist, gentlewoman farmer, tech junkie, student of Judaism, writer, and maker "

She considers herself a blend of all these. Dr. Nelson was raised in the Los Angeles area and attended a college preparatory school called Chadwick Academy. It was "old school"  in its academic emphasis with paper writing, Shakespeare and Latin for all. It was also progressive, deliberately imbuing students with the mandate to make the world a better place. Back before it was fashionable, the school recycled,  required community service, and included yoga as well as competitive sports in PE.

After high school she attended Stanford University and studied Science, Technology and Society, a multidisciplinary program. Her area of concentration was “Women and Technology”, and within this she focused on reproductive technologies such as the oral contraceptive pill. She had the privilege of working with Professor Carl Djerassi, the “Father of the Pill”, on the issues surrounding the birth control pill's acceptability among feminists. She also studied the women's health movement as well as the particular challenges of keeping girls on track with math and science education, now called STEM.

After marrying fellow dorm mate Greg Nelson in 1983, she settled on a premedical curriculum and collected pre-med class requirements in Bozeman at MSU, obtaining a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences with high honors. Medical school at the University of Utah in Salt Lake followed. There she received a community service award for work with pregnant teens. Internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology were conducted at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, concluding in 1994. She is a member of the Junior Classical league, Cum Laude, Phi Kappa Phi, is Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), and is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In 1994, Greg, Gina and their children Echo, Forest and Vale returned to the Flathead Valley permanently, and her solo practice was opened. She has practiced full time since then. She has severed as Department Chair several times. She participates in the voluntary annual board recertification tests from ABOG, and various continuing education activities. She is currently primary consultant Obstetrician for the Certified Nurse Midwife Program at Kalispell Regional Medical Center. She also participates in local cultural, philanthropic and environmental organizations. She enjoys the domestic and horticultural arts, as well as a regular workout schedule.

It is her hope that the education and inspiration she received can, in some measure, be passed on to her staff, and finally to her patients.
